Zeolite can bind excess histamine in the gut and, when combined with a low-histamine diet, may provide natural support for histamine intolerance.

What Is Histamine – and Why Can It Become a Problem?

Histamine is a naturally occurring messenger substance in the body that performs important functions in immune responses, digestion and inflammatory processes. At the same time, it is found in many foods, including cheese, red wine, tomatoes and fermented products.

In healthy people, the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) breaks down excess histamine in the gut. People with histamine intolerance often have insufficient DAO activity, which can lead to a wide range of non-specific symptoms.

Typical Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance

  • Diarrhoea, bloating
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Fatigue, dizziness

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Histamine Intolerance

With histamine intolerance, the body is unable to break down excess histamine sufficiently, often due to insufficient activity of the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO). This can lead to non-specific symptoms such as headaches, skin problems or digestive issues.

Common symptoms include diarrhoea and bloating, skin rash and itching, headaches or migraines, fatigue and dizziness, a runny nose and irregular menstrual cycles.

Foods considered high in histamine include fermented products such as sauerkraut and kefir, aged cheese, cured meat, alcohol (especially red wine), tomatoes, spinach, aubergines and foods containing vinegar.
